Best Cages for Macaws and Large Cockatoos

Macaws and large cockatoos are big, powerful and very long-lived. Their cage needs to be roomy enough for a wingspan that can stretch several feet, and strong enough to stand up to a beak that can crack the hardest nuts.

What large parrots need in a cage

  • Room to spread their wings fully without touching the sides, plus space for perches and toys.
  • Bar spacing around 1 inch, with thick, heavy-gauge bars.
  • Bird-proof locks. Large parrots are clever and strong enough to open ordinary latches.
  • A durable finish. Big beaks are tough on cages. Stainless steel holds up best; see stainless steel vs. powder-coated.
