Foraging for Parrots: How to Use In-Shell Nuts
Share
Wild parrots spend much of their day searching for food: cracking shells, peeling bark and digging into seed pods. Pet parrots that get their food in a bowl miss out on all that activity. One of the simplest ways to bring it back is with nuts in the shell.
Why foraging matters
- Mental stimulation. Parrots are smart, and working for food keeps their minds busy.
- Less boredom. Boredom can lead to screaming and feather picking. Foraging gives birds a healthy outlet.
- Beak exercise. Cracking shells helps keep the beak in good condition.
- Slower eating. Birds that work for treats eat them more slowly.
The best in-shell nuts for foraging
- Pistachios: a great starter nut. Some pistachios arrive partly open, which makes them easier for beginners.
- Pine nuts: small and quick to crack, ideal for medium parrots and for stuffing into small foraging toys.
- Patagonian Spice & Nut: a mix of in-shell pecans, walnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, macadamias, hazelnuts, pistachios and pine nuts, with star anise and cinnamon sticks. A real challenge for big beaks.
- Higgins Boca Nuts (In Shell): a medley of in-shell nuts for medium to large birds.
Match the nut to the beak
Very hard nuts like macadamias and Brazil nuts are best for macaws and other large parrots. Smaller parrots may not be able to crack them. You can pre-crack harder nuts for smaller birds or choose softer shells like pistachios and pine nuts.
Easy foraging ideas
- Start simple. Put a few in-shell nuts in your bird's bowl alongside its regular food.
- Wrap it. Twist a nut into a piece of plain paper or a paper cupcake liner.
- Hide it. Drop nuts into a box or cup filled with shredded paper.
- Use a toy. Stuff nuts into a foraging toy so your bird has to pull, twist or shred to get them out.
Increase the challenge slowly. If a task is too hard at first, your bird may give up.
Keep it balanced
Nuts are rich, so count foraging nuts as part of your bird's daily treats, especially for birds that gain weight easily. Read best nuts for parrots for guidance on how much to feed.
