How to Make Your Own Ultimate Blend with Build-A-Blend

Our Ultimate Blend is the food we feed every bird in our store. But what if your bird already eats a pellet you love, or your avian vet has recommended a specific brand? That's exactly why we created Paradise Build-A-Blend.

What is Build-A-Blend?

Build-A-Blend has all the makings of our Ultimate Blend without the pellets. It's a mix of dried fruits, vegetables, nuts and herbs. You add the pellets of your choice, and you get a custom Ultimate Blend built around the pellet your bird already knows.

Why build your own?

  • Keep your vet's recommended pellet. If your bird is on a specific pellet for health reasons, you don't have to switch.
  • Make pellets more exciting. Birds that are bored with plain pellets often eat them more eagerly when they're mixed with fruits, nuts and veggies.
  • Control the size. Choose a fine pellet for smaller birds or a coarse pellet for larger ones.

The ratio: 50/50

We recommend mixing 50% pellets with 50% Build-A-Blend. That's the same balance we use in our own Ultimate Blend.

Choosing a pellet

Any quality pellet works. Many of our customers use Harrison's, an organic pellet created by avian vets:

How to mix it

  1. Measure equal amounts of pellets and Build-A-Blend into a large bowl.
  2. Stir well so every scoop has a good mix.
  3. Make about two weeks' worth at a time, and store it in a sealed, rigid container at room temperature.
  4. Store the rest of your Build-A-Blend and pellets in the refrigerator. Don't freeze it, because ice crystals can melt and cause mold.

Tips

  • If your bird picks out only the nuts and fruit, offer the mix in the morning when it's hungriest and don't top up the bowl until it's mostly eaten.
  • Keep adding fresh vegetables every day. See bird-safe fruits and vegetables.
  • Prefer a ready-made mix? Our Ultimate Blends come pre-mixed in sizes for every bird.
